Before you start

Please have ready any documentation you have for your animal, including:

  • Any identification numbers for the animal, including but not limted to:

    • Unique Equine Life Number (UELN)

    • Microchip Number

    • Studbook or Breed Society details

    • Vaccination details (within the past 12 months)

    • Passport ID and details

Important Note: If you don't have any identification numbers for your horse or other equine, then follow our guide to adding a horse with no identification numbers

Step 1

Click the "+" icon or "Add Equine" button if you don't have any horses in your account yet.

Step 2

Choose whether you have any identification numbers for your horse.

If you have any of the following, select 'I have ID numbers for my equine':

  • Unique Equine Life Number: Typically 15 digits, starting with 124 for Canadian horses. If you have an imported horse, the first three digits will match the ISO 3166 country code of the passport's origin. For more information, see our article on UELN codes.

  • Microchip Number

  • Passport/Studbook or Breed Society Membership Number for the horse

  • Temporary ID Number (issued by Equine Register): Starts with 124TMP and is 15 digits in length.

If you don't have any of these, select "I don't have any ID for my equine" - Switch to this guide to Adding an equine with No ID

Step 3

Please confirm if you have a Unique Equine Life Number (UELN).

If you do have a UELN for your horse, enter the 15-digit number by selecting 'Yes, I have a Unique Equine Life Number for my equine'

Important Note: If the system does not accept your UELN, please contact our customer support team. To do this, cancel the add equine process, return to the dashboard, click the settings cog in the top right corner, and select the 'Help and Support' option.

You'll be prompted to confirm that the UELN you entered is correct.

If you don't have a UELN then you'll be able to enter other identification numbers in the following steps.

Step 3a - If you don't have a UELN

If you don't have a UELN, you will be prompted to enter another form of identification number. Choose from the following options:

  • Studbook or Breed Society Membership Number

  • Microchip Number

  • Temporary ID Number

Studbook or Breed Society Number

Select from a list of Canadian and American studbooks and breed societies. Enter your horse's membership number for the chosen organization.

Microchip Number

If your horse is microchipped, you can enter the microchip number by scanning your horse with a Bluetooth scanner and linking it to the app, or you can enter it manually. If you choose to enter it manually, you will be prompted to confirm the number.

Temporary ID Number

This is a 15-digit number issued by Equine Register. If your horse's location is within Canada, it will start with 124TMP.

Step 4

Confirm your relationship with the horse or other equine. (Figure x)

If you are the owner, you will be able to add the horse details in the following steps. For all other user groups, currently you will have to invite the owner. We are looking into updating this by the end of September 2024. See note below:

Please note: if you are not the owner of the animal, currently you will have to inform us who the owner is, and get them to register and add you as a connected users if you need access to the horses digital smartcard.

Step 5 - Equine Name

Tell us the name of your horse or other equine. This is the name that you know the animal as and is not to be confused with commercial and studbook name.

Step 6 - About your Equine

Tell us about your equine, including its Colour, Species, Sex and Date of birth. If you don't know the animals exact date of birth just try to enter the year as accurately as possible.

Step 7 - Country of Birth & Residence

Confirm which country your horse was born in and in which country it currently resides. The fields are set as default to Canada, but you can change this by clicking on them and selecting your animals country from the list.

Step 8 - Horse Location

Please confirm where your horse is primarily located. The options are:

  • Your home address as registered when you created your Digital Stable account

  • A barn, stud, or stables

  • Other

If you select barn, stud, or stables, we will request additional details about the premises, such as the name, address, and email (if available).

Please note: This information helps us provide location-specific disease alerts for your equine. For instance, we don’t want to send you alerts for British Columbia if your horse is located in Ontario. Rest assured, this information will remain confidential.

Step 9 - Current Vaccinations

Please enter the vaccinations your horse or other equine has received in the past 12 months.

You can select which diseases your animal has been vaccinated against and enter the date the vaccination was administered.

Please note: If your horse or other equine has not received any vaccinations, simply click "I'll do this later" to skip this section. This information will remain confidential.

Step 10 - Confirm Details

This is the final step! Carefully review all the information you have entered. If anything is incorrect, you can go back to the respective section and make edits.

Once you have verified that all information is accurate to the best of your knowledge, check the consent box and click "Confirm & Add Equine."

You will receive an email confirming your horse's Temporary ID number, and your animal will be added to the Canadian Equine Register.
